Book
Why Do We Go to Theatre: The Deconstruction of Meaningless is a collection of essay where I investigate the culture value of theatre and audience experience.
Drawing on theories of contemporary theatre and performance studies, literary theory, as well as my participant observation as an audience member at theatre festivals in Beijing and Tianjin, China, I investigate the meaning of theatre-going. Resonating with C. K. Ogden and I.A. Richard’s meaning of meaning, I deconstruct the meaning-making in theatre.
The book was published in Chinese, by Zhengjiang Publishing United Group in 2016.
Podcast
From 2020-
In response to the global pandemic, Eternal Moon is a theatre podcast created by my friends and me. Back then, theaters were shut down, and we could no longer enjoy live performances. This podcast became a way to stay connected, even though we were spread across three continents and five time zones.
In each episode, we discuss a curated topic relevant to the current moment. Theater is a discursive space where we reject blind consensus and believe that multiple truths can coexist.
For example, after George Floyd was killed by police in 2020, amidst the Black Lives Matter protests, we revisited Julius Caesar to discuss the legitimacy of violence in politics.
The podcast is mainly in Chinese.
